The autumn transition in Seaside, Oregon for 2026 brings a shift toward cooler, wetter regional weather, making early fall a dynamic time on the North Coast. While September and early October frequently provide a mild, sunny extension of summer—often called "Second Summer" by locals—the 2026 autumn forecast is heavily influenced by a strong El Niño pattern, pointing toward a quick transition into cooler and wetter conditions than typical years as October progresses.

Shellfish, Razor Clam and Dungeness Season 

Razor clams 

• Daily limit of first 15 dug (no sorting or releasing).

• Razor clams may be taken by hand, shovel, clam gun or tube with opening no less than 4” (cylindrical) or 4” X 3” (elliptical).

• Razor clams are closed July 15 to Sept. 30 north of Tillamook Head (Clatsop County) for annual conservation closure.

• Before heading out, always check the weekly Recreation Report to see which areas of the coast are currently open or closed for razor clamming.

Bay clams (butter, littleneck, gaper, and cockle)

• Daily limit of 20 in aggregate, only 12 may be gapers.

• Must take first 12 gapers (no sorting or releasing).

• May be taken by hand or hand-powered tools.

Purple varnish clams

• Daily limit of 72.

Dungeness crab

• Daily limit of 12 (males only)

• Minimum size of 5 ¾ inches. Correct size is measured as a straight line‌ across the back (caliper measurement) in front of, but not including the points.

• Bays, beaches, estuaries, tide pools, piers and jetties are open for crabbing all year, 24 hours per day.

• Ocean waters are closed for crab Oct. 16 – Nov. 30.

• May be taken using crab rings, baited lines, or pots (limited to 3 rings/lines/pots total, per person); by hand, dip net, or rake.

2026 Oregon Shellfish License Fees

Annual Shellfish License (Resident): $13. 

Annual Shellfish License (Non-Resident): Higher (approx. $39–$65 based on 3-5x multiplier). 

Youth: Licenses are generally required for ages 12 and older. 

License Duration: Valid for the calendar year.  

License Requirement: A license is mandatory for harvesting clams, crab, and other shellfish. Limits: The daily limit for razor clams is 15. 

Where to Buy: Licenses can be purchased at the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife website  (ODFW), ODFW offices, or retail vendors like Big 5 Sporting Goods. 

Regulations: Always check ODFW regulations for closures due to biotoxins.

Unfortunately, just one day after reopening for the season, razor clamming has closed again along the entire Oregon Coast, including Seaside. Recent samples showed domoic acid levels above the safety threshold. For more details and updates, visit the ODFW website. We'll keep you informed as new information becomes available.

Seasons & Closures

• Clatsop Beaches (Seaside): Clatsop County beaches have an annual conservation closure for razor clams from July 15 to September 30 to protect young clams. Digging for razor clams opens back up on October 1. 

• Health Advisories: Closures due to biotoxins (like domoic acid) can happen at any time. Always check the Oregon Department of Agriculture Shellfish Closures or call the shellfish safety hotline at 1-800-448-2474 before heading out

Seaside Clam Chowder

 Ingredients

• 4 slices thick-cut bacon, diced

• 3 tbsp butter

• 1 medium yellow onion, diced

• 2 stalks celery, chopped

• 3 cups clam juice (plus reserved fresh razor clam nectar)

• 4 cups Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced small

• 2 cups fresh razor clams, chopped to fingertip size

• 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

• 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped

• 1 bay leaf

• 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)

• Salt and black pepper to taste 

Instructions

1. Crisp the bacon: Cook the diced bacon in a large pot over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pot.

2. Sauté the vegetables: Add the butter, diced onion, and celery to the bacon drippings. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the vegetables are soft and translucent. 

3. Simmer the potatoes: Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the clam juice, reserved fresh clam nectar, thyme, bay leaf, and diced Yukon Gold potatoes. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. 

4. Add the cream and clams: Pour in the heavy cream and return to a gentle simmer. Add the chopped fresh razor clams and cook gently for only 3 to 5 minutes so they stay tender and do not rubberize. 

5. Season and serve: Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls and top with the reserved crispy bacon and a pat of butter.

The Seaside Museum and Historical Society

The Seaside Museum and Historical Society was founded in 1974 by a group of local residents who wanted to celebrate and share the rich history of the community.

The museum began in a small storefront in downtown Seaside, but as the collection grew, the membership decided a permanent location was needed. A city lot was leased and a building erected and the museum opened in November 1983 at its current location.

The museum moved the historic Butterfield Cottage to the museum grounds in 1984 and began a comprehensive restoration of the building. The museum officially opened its new exhibit, the oldest beach cottage museum on the Oregon coast, in 1991.

Today, the Seaside Museum and Historical Society is home to a wide variety of exhibits and artifacts that showcase the history of Seaside and the surrounding area. The museum's collection includes photographs, documents, artifacts, and other materials that tell the story of the town's development from a remote beach village to a thriving tourist destination. Visitors to the museum can explore exhibits on a wide range of topics, including the area's Native American history, the Lewis and Clark Expedition

and the growth of Seaside as a resort town. The museum also offers educational programs, tours, and special events throughout the year.

Seaside Aquarium

Seaside Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast.

Founded in 1937, the aquarium is privately owned and the descendants of some of the founders are still active in the aquarium operation.

The aquarium is proud to be involved in public awareness programs: Marine Mammal Stranding, Seaside Beach Discovery Program, SOLVE, Haystack Rock Awareness Program, the Wildlife Center of the North Coast and other marine education tours and activities for school children.

Mercury Coast

Eric and Molly Sappington first formed the duo Mercury 27 years ago after moving from the Midwest to the Oregon Coast. Between 1999 and 2008, they released an EP and two full length records. Eric continued songwriting and performing around the Northwest, while Molly focused on raising their two sons.

Flash forward to September 2022, when Ebon Bergeron approached Eric and asked if he'd want to add some guitar tracks to his drums. The result was a fast-moving expression of emotion and creativity. Both Eric and Ebon had been waiting for this moment, and it happened at just the right time.

Enter Steve Doss, a recent transplant from California. Steve joined on standup bass, then Molly returned with backing vocals and percussion. MERCURY COAST was formed.

We have now built a solid local following and plan to release our first of 2 singles, Spring 2024. We look forward to making this world a better place through art and music. This is the time to feel the shine.

Astoria Walking Tour

Step into the layered story of Astoria, where river, sea, and hillside converge, on a guided walking tour through the Downtown Astoria Historic District. Offered weekly by the Lower Columbia Preservation Society, these tours explore the architectural heritage, working waterfront history, and civic ambitions that shaped Oregon’s oldest American settlement.

Tours are point-to-point, beginning at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and concluding at the Flavel House Museum, traversing approximately ten blocks over the course of 90 minutes. Along the way, participants encounter landmark commercial buildings, vernacular streetscapes, and stories of industry, immigration, and resilience that continue to define Astoria’s character.

Walking tours are offered Sundays, from Mother’s Day through mid-October, and are led by knowledgeable LCPS volunteer guides with deep ties to local history and preservation advocacy. Each tour emphasizes both architectural observation and the broader cultural context of the place inviting participants to see familiar streets with fresh eyes. The tour will finish with enough time to enjoy lunch at the Sunday Market in downtown Astoria, or you'll be in time to join the Liberty Theater tour starting at noon.

Great Columbia Crossing 10K Run Walk

Whether you’re an experienced runner or looking for a family friendly event, the Great Columbia Crossing 10k appeals to everyone.

The Great Columbia Crossing 10K normally takes place in October each year on the 2nd Sunday. Participants start in Washington, cross the Astoria-Megler Bridge, and end in Oregon.

Experience the glory of the Columbia River as you trek across the Astoria-Megler Bridge during this unique opportunity to walk/run across the bridge! This October, Festival attendees will experience the incredible talent of Latino/world-class artists Diego Figueiredo and Chuchito Valdes, each bringing a trio of amazing instrumentalists.

Concertgoers will enjoy the exciting performance of each trio separately, and then all six musicians will come together for the final portion of the concert. AND TO ADD TO THIS EXCITEMENT, the Ilwaco High School mariachi band has been invited to join these professional musicians for the finale!
